Can I represent myself?

Updated: Sep 19, 2017

Anyone charged with a crime in Hawaii has a legal right to represent themselves, but that is one right I would never recommend that you exercise. Even attorneys who are charged with crimes usually get another attorney to represent them in court. Navigating the complex criminal legal system can be overwhelming for even seasoned lawyers if they aren't experienced in handling criminal matters. Most criminal defense attorneys in Hawaii offer initial consultations for either free or a small consultation fee. I would always recommend at least talking to an attorney about your options before deciding to represent yourself in court.
